When purchasing a print magazine, a magazine would normally cost around £1-£4 each when sold in shops which, isn't really expensive. To actually make it, it would cost around £100,000-£1 million pounds. However, when it comes to a digital magazines, the buyer would not have to worry about money as it is free. but, a niche amount of digital websites for magazines, would cost maybe £0.99 tops and the actual cost, of making the digital magazine being less than £200. Through the pricing comparison of the two magazines types, we see how most people would prefer digital magazines rather print in terms of pricing as we see the positives of digital being, how they wouldn't need to really worry about pricing as it is practically free with majority of digital magazine distributors.  And another positive to this would be how when making the magazines digitally, the pricing is not that much compared to digital, cosing an overall amount of less than £200. However, the positives and limitations for Print magazines would be how the    of the costs being  the magazine is not high in price, in terms of making the actual magazine, which would be beneficial towards company, as they would not be limited because of a loss of money being able to expand on content. Benefits and limitations of digital magazines in pricing would be, that it's practically free to read, and would not cost a lot when actually making it digitally, whereas, limitations of this would be   and isn't really expensive when creating the product. The use of this character's costume stereotypically suggests that this character is British working class male, as the flat cap is a traditional piece of clothing that is typically worn by British males. The last two characters on the left and right hand side of the page are shown to be wearing a plain black t-shirt (the man) and a white and grey long sleeve clothing. The simplicity of these three characters costumes suggests they are people not high social group status, further reinforcing the fact of the working class status. The

use of the character in the digital magazine wearing red silk formal wear symbolizes luxury and wealth, as silk is an expensive material mostly purchased by people of wealth. The use of the characters' costume holds connotations of gang affiliation and wealth as most people today in the media associate durags and use of black clothing as intimidating and dangerous. This could also portray how the character is trying to seem towards the viewers. The Silver chain would suggest wealth and status, because of how these pieces of jewelry have heavy connotations money. In this magazine, the character is shown in high key lighting rather than low key lighting. This would have been done this way, to make sure the character is fully visually enhanced for the viewers to recognize who the character on page is. The female character on the left costume is shown to contrast with the characters clothing on the right, as we see her to be wearing a simplistic red t-shirt, with black jeans. Suggesting the character on the left does not have the same type of views compared to the other character. The lighting for the character on the right hand side of the double page spread, is shown to be placed in low key lighting rather than high key lighting, which would have been done to make sure the audience is aware of the main subject of the page. The character on the left page is shown to be in high key lighting, which was done in the opposite, to make the shift of focused to not only be on the character of the page but also the images around the character. Format Discussion

This magazine is shown to have some advantages and disadvantages. However, a clear disadvantage of this magazine would be how some may find the contents hard to read caused by the small lettering being compacted together. Another Disadvantage would be the cost effectiveness of purchasing a print magazine as some prints, are expensive compared to using a digitally made magazine. An advantage of this double page spread would be how the spread is easy to navigate, which would make sure the audiences does not get lost and lose interest.

Evaluation:

The two images shown are my front cover and double page spread of a magazine I composed based on my chosen genre (Hip-Hop), and for an artist that I made “Cross Hunnid.” However, to compose these two products, I had to arrange a range of different planning materials that contributed to the final products shown, being though conducting research of the genre, I was planning to base my magazine on. This included finding out research on where this genre originated, Hip-hop artists that played a critical role in where this genre is today, as well as the albums that also contributed, the use of styling associated with genre and the poses used along with them. However, while I was researching on all these four topics, the research on the poses and the styling of the genre was a particular principal factor to what I needed to do to compose my magazine, it allowed me to initiate an idea of how I can firstly style character for my magazine in a genre conventional way that would fit with the genre, but also the way in which I needed to make sure my character was posed to fit it successfully with the way we normally see hip-hop artists within the genre, to make sure the audience is clearly aware of the message being shown. Another planning material that contributed to the final piece was the research of different fonts that I would potentially be using for my magazines, where I went on Dafont.com and chose 10 different fonts which fitted well with the Hip-Hop genre which I then limited down and picked the one, I thought would go well with the ideas I had for my magazine, being the Urban rebel font, which was the best font that I thought gave off the most genre associated appealing's. The next thing I investigated while planning for my magazine was the Masthead, Magazine coverlines and varied brands of Hip-Hop magazine front covers and double page spread. The use of looking into this helped me firstly pick out and receive an idea for the different type of font placements I wanted to use in magazine, while also showing me the diverse ways to inform me on what I could add to my magazine, to replicate a successful magazine. The last prep material used to help me compose this magazine was a digital and drawn drafts. The main purpose for this was to help me structure out the layout and placements of text and images that were going to be located on the pages for me to work around and refer to when making my magazine. Prior to me making the magazine, I had to take a range of different photos of my magazine character doing different poses with different camera techniques and angles, which was done to offer me a range of different options of photos and camera anglings, to pick from when making the magazine. Through my magazine, I feel like I was able to effectively appeal to my target audience, while allowing them to also take in the intended messages effectively being expressed through the way in which I created my pieces. This is illustrated through the way I first utilised the use of direct contact which is used in the photo placed on the front cover, as we see the character in a Medium Long Shot directly looking at the audience. The use of this offers a personal appeal to the audience, making them feel like the magazine and everything said is aimed directly at the audience. Which is highly effective as this would persuade the audience into opening and purchasing the product. In the magazine my character is shown to be wearing a green and red cap and a black tech fleece tracksuit. The use of the character first wearing a tracksuit was done intestinally because of how tracksuits have urban connotations, as they are seen as fashionable within the Hip-Hop culture worn by many artists from when Hip-Hop started to originate until up to now where we still see big artists within the genre wearing tracksuits, which tend to steotypically be worn by black people. Therefore, through making sure my character was wearing this type of clothing I was reinforcing the fashionable aspects within the genre, which is also effective as this would make sure the audience will be able to easily pick up the type of genre my magazine is. The lighting within this front cover is shown to be high key, florescent lighting which makes sure the character and the background is clearly shown. The use of this type of lighting, sets an upbeat tone for the audience, rather than a down beat type of tone, where there would be less lighting, which is effective as it will evoke a positive mood towards the audience making them already aware just by first glance of the type of magazine it is. The use of high key lighting also makes sure that everything being shown to the viewers is clearly enhanced for the audience to clearly see, as a magazine shown with lowkey lighting would less likely be seen and purchased by a buyer compared to a magazine engulfed with high lighting and colors. The use of the setting shown in this magazine establishes an urban type of tone as we see the type of location the character is placed in being an olden type of place, which we can infer from the walls we see the character next to/leaning through as well as the chips and disorientation of coloring of the walls with the different patches and textures. When composing the magazine cover, I made sure I firstly included a visible masthead of my chosen name for my magazine being “HIP-HOP’SFINES,” in a bold Urban rebel green and red font. The choosing of the color of the font was done this way because of how I wanted to create a sense of linkage between the typography of the page and a part of the main characters costume, which was based on the characters cap he is wearing, which was also done this way to create an easy to follow layout which I feel like I was able to achieve through the decision of linking the color of the text with a part of the characters costume. The use of making sure the masthead was placed in bold in the top of the page, was to ensure the audience can clearly see this title, making them aware of the ownership of the magazine. After this, I decided to include a white coverline in the urban rebel font, placed on the top left of the of the page directly on top of the masthead, as well as another coverline placed directly below the masthead on the right in a white and black urban rebel font coloring. The reasoning for the placements of the coverlines, offers an eye catching approach towards the audience as we see the use of contrast between the coverline paced on the top left of the magazine, with the black background design used on the page with the green and red coloring used for the masthead, and with the bottom right coverline we see the use of the black outline version of the urban rebel and the inside being white, which I decided on doing to ensure there would be no problem trying to read. My magazine also consists of a range of different coverlines placed on the right side and bottom left side of the magazine in and solid green font with the red bracket L shapes placed on the right and left corners of the bold titling, along with brief titling placed under these titles and with a solid green coloring with the outline red font around the text. The main purpose of the coverlines was to make sure there were brief descriptions on what to expect when reading the magazine, further promoting the product to gain the interest of my targeted audience. Therefore, I made it crucial to add big names such as lil Durk, and Polo G, who are both big artist that play an important role to the Hip-Hop scene today and would be known by my target audience, which would prove to be effective as this would mean my magazine cover, would be doing its role well of making my target audience want to open and read. I decided to include an advertisement sticker placed on the left in a bold white font. The use of the text within the sticker, creates an effect to the audience making them feel like they need to purchase the item using the words “Limited Edition” as these two words, are commonly used to describe products that are unique and limited towards the quantity of the product that would be sold. Therefore, using this phrase, will make the magazine seem special and prized towards the audience which would make them want to purchase the product, which would be successful as an element of a magazine is to entice the target audience with the visual appeal. The next element to magazine I included, was the Main coverline, which was the main characters name “Cross Hunnid,” which also included a white and black coverline on the top of this title as well as also being composed in the same green and red urban rebel font as the Masthead, which also done this match with the characters costume. On the left side of the cover in a black font, and in the bottom right corner of the magazine cover I made sure to include website link, scan code and QR code. The use of the website link and the QR code reinforces the digital aspects of this magazine offering a way for the audience to access the content within the magazine through a website or app, while the scan code reinforces the print aspects of the magazine, making this magazine a digital/print magazine, Which I think is effective as it offers two separate ways for the audience to engage with the magazine. Overall, this magazine cover composed was a successful piece as I was able to include a wide range of different typography techniques that contributed into replicating a professional magazine seen by the target audience as well as being able to reinforce the simplicity aspects of a traditional magazine to ensure the target audience finds it easy to follow. However, if I had a chance to improve on this piece, I would make sure I added a bit more variety of colors to this cover to contribute to the visual appeal aspects of this magazine. The next piece I composed was the double page spread. The image I decide to go for as the main image was Photo 3, as I thought this image fitted the page well with what I had planned when composing this piece. However, when initially planning for my double page spread, I had a different choice of main image in mind being, Photo 13, which I later decided was not going to work. The main color scheme and font I decided to go with for this double page spread, was the urban rebel font and a space dark grey type of color. The choice of color for this magazine was based on the characters costume as the characters tracksuit is shown to portray a black color in the magazine cover, whereas due to the lighting of the characters location, we see the change with the character’s tracksuit as it is starts to give off the type of space grey color mentioned. Another reason for the choosing of this specific color, was to replicate the same actions I did with the magazine cover, with the double page spread being to match the font coloring with the characters costume, which I did with the purpose of creating a sense of linkage between these two pieces. Through the main image of the character, we see the way in which the character is holding his face and the way he is smiling which could infer the characters carless attitude. On this page we also see the camera technique used also being a Long shot, which I thought was a successful choice, as this camera technique supplies a fuller look to the page as we can see the whole character, which also brings a bit of more personality to the page, rather than using a Close up camera technique or a Mid shot. This double page spread includes a quote of the main character, on the left page. The use of the placement of the quote being right next to the character creates comic like speech bubble effect, that would stand out to the target audience. Directly below the quote is the main coverline, consisting of three colors being the space dark grey as the main text, the black which I duplicated to appear as a shadow effect, and the white which I used as the around outline. The use of this main selling line placement, on the bottom right page in big texts, makes sure the audience are drawn to what is to be shown on the pages, as well as to offer brief context on what to expect when reading on through the page. On the right page of the double page spread, I decided to include the same type of masthead layout with the coverline placed in small on the top, as well as a stand first in a black and dark grey font. The use of me adding the standfirst to my double page magazine, was used to offer a brief introductory summary of the contents within the magazine. Standfirsts are normally printed or shown in dark bold fonts, therefore for me to replicate this type of visual for my magazine I made sure I included the font cover in black and made the 5 lines of the standfirsts individual layers, where I placed them right next to each other with a minimal number of gaps shown to ensure I was creating the same type of effect of a traditional magazine. Directly under this is two columns of the main contents of the page which starts off with a drop capital of the starting sentence of the magazine, used to point out where to start reading from for the audience. The reasoning for me using columns rather than one continues paragraph as the main text of the page, was done this way to give off a tidy visual appeal, while also making it easier for the audience to not get lost while reading. At the bottom of the page, I decided to include the link of the magazine's website shown in the front cover, as well as an QR code to again reinforce the digital and physical print aspects of the magazine, but also to offer a way for the audience to gain more information on this specific page by scanning the code. For the background, I used Photo 1 where I enlarged and reduced the brightness opacity, to ensure everything placed on this image would be visible for the audience. Overall, this magazine double page spread was also a successful piece as I was able to create a successful use of linkage between the two pieces to indicate to the audience that they are a part of the same product. An improvement I would give to this double page spread would be adding some photos to the page as, we normally see this utilised in a range of different successful hip hop magazines brands and the engaging effect it also supplies to the audience, to keep their interests.
